The 4th JSKA
World Karate Championships 2008
Hasha International Karate British squad took part in the 4th JSKA World Karate Championships over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd August 2008 at Manchester’s Velodrome. The British team did fantastically well coming 4th in the World Team Championships, with 30 countries taking part in individual events as well as team events. The team consisting of Steven Pendlebury, Dave Ward and John Marsh fought well all day beating the 2006 World Team Champions Serbia who were formidable opponents. The Hasha England team went on to face Spain in the semi-finals who were the eventual winners.
Jason Netherton, John Marsh and Antony Pendlebury and his brother Steven all had great fights but were all very unlucky to make it through there areas. John and Steven both had injuries which hindered there progression and due to this both fighters retired due to their injuries.
George Best and Dave Ward both had great fights in the individuals making there way through the preliminaries then into finals with some spectacular Ippon scores (full points), before both team mates faced each other in the semi-finals where Dave Ward took 3rd place and the Bronze medal. George Best went on to fight a worthy opponent in the final, and came second taking the Silver medal in the World Championships.
During the day we met many old friends as well as making some new ones such as the Polish team and the Spanish team, who have warmly invited us over to Spain for events. Hasha International Karate would like to thank all our members who came to the championships in order to cheer the team on. We appreciate your support and hope that we have made you proud to be Hasha International Karate members.
One final point I’d like to congratulate and thank the Hasha International Karate team every one has made fantastic gains and results in such a short time. The hard work you have put into your training has come to fruition in this tournament and I’d like to congratulate you all, thank you.

Hasha International Karate
Training Course
April 2008
Hasha International Karate held the second of its training courses on Saturday 26th April 2008 at Total Fitness Whitefield. The emphasis of the day was on Basics, Dachi no Kata and Kata. The Basics consisted of using reverse Age Uke, Mawashi Geri, Gyaku Zuki and Soto Uke, Uchi Uke, Mae Geri and finishing with Gyaku Zuki. These techniques were performed up the Dojo and then with a partner in order to practice and perfect (Bunkai) application of technique.
Next Datchi no Kata was explained and shown to us emphasising correct use of movement before moving onto learning Kata Heian Nidan and Heian Sandan while the Brown and Black belts were taught Bassai Sho, an advanced Black Belt Kata. All Kata were broken down in very easy to follow segments which meant everyone on the course went away with learning a new Kata.
Course feedback has been overwhelming and due to this we will be holding a course every month. Funds raised will go towards the England senior and junior squad. Once again a course thoroughly enjoyed by all. “Can’t wait till the next one?”

WTKA International
Birmingham
2007
Ippon after Ippon
Hasha Karate England took part in the WTKA International Open held in Birmingham on the 17th February 2007. The event was well attended with competitors from England,Scotland, Ireland, Afghanistan and Hungry all looking in pensive mode ready for the day’s proceedings.
The squad consisted of Chief Instructor and England Squad coach Sensei George Best, and Senior Hasha Instructor Sensei Jason Netherton, Rick Ward and Sarah Foster.
The three man team Kumite saw George Best, Rick Ward and Jason Netherton line up against a team from Afghanistan where some very fast Ippon scores beat a very worthy Afghanistan team, and a win for Hasha Karate England.
In The second round the team opened up again with two very fast Ippon scores, ending the match before it even started. Unfortunately the score line was 2-1 against Hasha Karate England.
Both matches seemed to be a crowd pleaser for spectators as many commented on the speed and accuracy of our competitors as they scored Ippon after Ippon in the team event and in the individual Kumite, which saw Jason Netherton, Rick Ward and Sarah Foster fighting well in there individual events. A fantastic achievement for a team used to fighting Shobu - Ippon Kumte (two half points or one full point) and quickly adapting to the WKF Kumite system of (six half points or three full points), a commendable performance by Hasha Karate England.
Competitors and officials were very hospitable and this has lead to a new found friendship. I’d like to thank John Sweeney who has made it possible for Hasha Karate England to compete in the next WTKA competition held in Sligo Ireland, we look forward to seeing you there.

Curam De Cara
Training Course & Grading
2007
Once again George and Ian Best were invited along with Jenny, Jordan, Saffron and Steve by there good Karate friends Liam, Teresa, Marlene and Liam Og Griffin to take a training course and grading at The Curam De Cara Karate Academy of Martial Arts, from Saturday 31st March to Sunday 1st April at the Rathpeacon GAA Hall, Planet Health Club, Ballyanly Sports Complex and Leisure World, where we were met by some very eager martial artist who wanted to train hard.
The first session saw Curam De Cara’s youth class with students who have just come back from winning a tournament in Italy. With this enthusiasm, they wanted to impress the instructors. This session was a fantastic success as all the students enjoyed the sessions. Ian and George put on a questions and answer session after the lesson where many of the youth class asked questions about techniques, training methods and the most difficult question of all “How long have you had your belt for..?” which brought the house down with much laughter.
We finished with a Gi signing at the end as many wanted autographs and the traditional course photo before moving onto the next venue.
The Ballyanly Sports Complex which is host to the Cork Kenpo Karate Club, which we were invited to train many of there students who have a lot of potential, with many of this team competing in tournaments. Some of the students asked questions about techniques, how to improve foot speed, how to develop fast kicks and how to develop good distance and timing. These were some of the questions which we answered before moving onto our next venue.
The Planet Health Club, this is one of Curam De Cara’s newest venues with a fantastic sprung wooden floor which we christened. Again the students were very attentive, and willing to learn. After this lesson, the class were privileged to see a Dan grading in which William Brown and Teresa Griffin took 1st Dan and 4th Dan. Both trained exceptionally well during the day and a close eye was kept on both as they took there grading. It was all worth while as William passed his Shodan, 1st Dan and Teresa passed her Yondan 4th Dan a fantastic achievement by both of them as they shown spirit, commitment and good knowledge of Shotokan Karate.
The fourth venue was Leisure World, a sports centre with a nice wooden floor again this is a new venue with a lot of potential, and it was a chance to see Curam De Cara’s youths perform a demonstration to many onlookers. It was extremely pleasing to see their dedication and commitment over the weeks as they practised in order to perform in front of a crowd of people. Then it was George and Ian’s turn, as they performed some breath taking take down techniques to the wow’s of the crowd.
Once again another great course well and truly enjoyed by all who attended. We all enjoyed the fantastic meal at The Planet this was a good opportunity to catch up with old and new friends. I’d like to thank the Griffin’s and the Maguire’s for a great time, and we’ll see you all again in a few months.
